Our Services - Cardiology

The goal of the cardiology service of the Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center is to provide the highest level of cardiac care in conjunction with consistent and effective communication with the client and referring veterinarian.

The cardiology service is staffed Monday through Wednesday and alternate Fridays. Phone consultations with referring veterinarians are available 7 days a week and cardiac consultations through the VSEC emergency service are available within 24 - 48 hours of admission, 7 days a week.

Our cardiology service is staffed by a board-certified veterinary cardiologist who is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Cardiology) or ACVIM (Cardiology).

Only Diplomates of the ACVIM (Cardiology) have completed a 3-year residency in cardiology and passed a series of national qualifying examinations. No other veterinarians have received as much rigorous and complete training and testing in the field of veterinary cardiac diagnostics and care.

Services Offered:

  • Comprehensive cardiac examination
  • Electrocardiography (ECG)
  • Echocardiography with M mode, 2D and color flow Doppler modalities for the diagnosis of congenital and developmental heart disease
  • Specialized enhanced dye studies for difficult congenital disease (right to left shunts)
  • 24 hour Holter & Event Monitoring for cardiac arrhythmia detection
  • Thoracocentesis, pericardiocentesis
  • Indirect blood pressure evaluation
  • Discriminate use of the VDxI (Feline and Canine CardioCare TM)
  • ICU hospitalization and 24 hour care for critical cardiac patients
  • Tissue Doppler Imaging for early detection of cardiomyopathy

When your pet is referred to VSEC for cardiac care, you will start with an initial cardiac consultation, including a thorough evaluation of any medical history or diagnostics provided by your referring veterinarian.

Your pet’s consultation may include a baseline blood pressure evaluation, interpretation of your veterinarian's radiographs, in-house radiographs, electrocardiogram or echocardiogram, including conventional and color flow Doppler evaluation.

The cardiologist will discuss a treatment plan and follow-up recommendations. If hospitalization, continued care or monitoring is recommended, we will be in constant communication with you about your pet’s status and will keep your referring veterinarian updated on all treatments.

Testimonial

Connie and I are both eternally grateful to you (and your colleagues) for the wonderful care and utmost concern you showed for our boy Stiller. …Stiller was diagnosed initially with heart issues many years ago and we were told he might not survive past 3-5 years of age. His reaching 14 years was a miracle to us.

Very Truly Yours, Bob & Connie, Wyncote, PA
