The goal of the holistic medicine & acupuncture service of the Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center is to provide the highest quality Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) to patients in need. Only CVAs and CVCHs have completed extensive study and training in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine and passed multiple examinations.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice that has been proven to maintain wellness, prevent disease and treat many conditions. Acupuncture uses needles placed at specific points on the body. These needles elicit a physiological response that can relieve pain and cure disorders. The needles are so fine and smooth that most pets do not even notice their placement.

Acupuncture and herbs can be used as sole therapies or as complementary therapies to conventional medical and surgical treatments.

Our holistic medicine & acupuncture service is available on Fridays by appointment with our certified veterinary acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist.

Disorders commonly improved through TCVM:

  • Arthritic pain and stiffness
  • Chronic pain
  • Weakness
  • Intervertebral disc disease
  • Neurological problems
  • Trauma-related issues
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances (vomiting, diarrhea and anorexia, lack of appetite)

During the initial visit, your pet's history and current condition are reviewed and a thorough physical examination is performed. Your pet's personality and lifestyle will be discussed, a treatment plan formulated and the first treatment given. Anticipate about 60 minutes for the initial examination, evaluation and treatment. The number of treatments will depend on the individual patient and severity of disease. Patients with chronic conditions, such as arthritis, often respond favorably in 3 - 5 treatments, given every 1 - 2 weeks. Treatments are then tapered to maintain the beneficial response.
