The goal of the oncology service of the Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center is to provide the highest level of oncologic care in conjunction with consistent and effective communication with the client and referring veterinarian.
VSEC’s oncology service is staffed Wednesday through Saturday by a board-certified veterinary oncologist who is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Oncology) or ACVIM (Oncology).
Only Diplomates of the ACVIM (Oncology) have completed a 3-year residency in oncology and passed a series of national qualifying examinations. No other veterinarians have received as much rigorous and complete training and testing in the fields of basic cancer biology, chemotherapy and radiation oncology.

- Diagnosis/Management of various neoplastic conditions
- Chemotherapy administration
- Immunotherapy
- Radiation therapy consultation and treatment with in-house linear accelerator
- Management of chemotherapy related side effects
- Enrollment/recommendation for clinical trials
If your pet is diagnosed with cancer, you may be referred to a VSEC oncologist for a discussion of your pet’s diagnosis, including available treatment options and prognosis. Treatment may be started the same day as the initial appointment. Chemotherapy treatment may involve an intravenous injection given at VSEC or an oral medication for you to give at home. Most pets become accustomed to our chemotherapy routine and do not require sedation.
We will keep your veterinarian informed about the specific details of your pet’s cancer, treatment options and prognosis so that you can work with us in the decision-making process.
Because we work closely with your primary veterinarian, we request that you bring all of your pet’s pertinent medical history to the initial appointment, including results of any recent testing. Additional diagnostics can be performed at VSEC. During recheck or chemotherapy appointments, the oncologist will examine your pet to assess progress. Specific diagnostics may be run and evaluated to ensure that the treatment can be administered safely.
Although we adhere to guidelines regarding cancer treatment in pets, we believe in treating with therapies tailored to your pet’s needs and your expectations. Our oncology team will work closely with you throughout the process of your pet’s cancer treatment, keeping your pet’s quality of life a top priority.
